  1. Wow this is really nice. My son is turning 5 in Feb and he would be thrilled if I made something like this for him, I was wondering if you could just share with me how you made the head and limbs of the Tortuga and did you get it to be above the base. Would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks a lot.

  2. Sure thing, Thanks for asking!! So I used a wooden circle that I found at Michaels Craft and nailed that to a small rectangle piece of wood which was nailed to a small circle (all in a row, not on top of each other) and that was the structure for the body. I used 4 x 1/2" in diameter dowels for the legs cut to be about 3 -4 inches tall. I glued and nailed those underneath the wooden circle that was the support for the body.

For the cake part. The legs were 2 cupcakes on top of each other with their tops facing each other and held together by buttercream frosting. I cut a small hole in them that would allow the dowel to go through the middle of both cupcakes.

The head was a piece of cake cut to the shape of the rectangle and small circle nailed together and then I placed an upside-down cupcake on the top of the head to create the shape of the head. The tail was strictly fondant and a skewer.

I hope that makes sense. It was a little difficult to describe. If you'd like, email me at sdleavitt@gmail.com and I can email you back a sketch of the structure. Happy 5th Birthday to your son!!

  3. Thanks a lot. I think I kind of understand. You made a wooden board for the cake and supported it with dowels, before placing the carved cake and covering it with fondant and attaching the limbs. I am a bit confused about how you placed the other two pieces horizontally. Was it for the back and front? I have also sent you an email. Thanks.

  4. Beautiful cake! I'd love to make this for my sons 6th birthday! Is there any way I could see a pic of the structure? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
